Description

This sign dates anywhere from the WWI period to possibly as late as the WWII period, but we are not sure either way.  The way it is riveted together and not welded suggests that it could possibly date earlier than WWI.  Also, we are fairly sure that this rare sign does not date after the WWII period when cheaper and less ornate sign designs started to become more prevalent.  This sign is most likely of US origin.  We purchased it from an old "general store" in the area just before it closed for good.  This sign is a classic "Justice of Peace" sign indicating where local people could get married or obtain legal documents.  The sign condition is about GOOD, showing a little rust, bare spots, and scuffs, etc.  This sign was purchased with the intent to mount it on a painted wall mural depicting an old country house where we could then add in front a solider mannequin of ours along with a young lady mannequin wearing a wedding dress as they approached the house to get a marriage license.  At the moment the wedding dress is also available from this exhibit (see inventory number U.677 for the wedding dress).  Antique signs are extremely popular with collectors, even for signs for bussinesses with many stores/branches/products etc.  Rare signs such as this that are for only 1 singular business entity are much more rare and thus more valuable.  A real bargain for sign collectors who know their stuff!
